Jack is pretty familiar with doing basic repairs on very old and poorly maintained automobiles. Just they're normally not shaped like giant... emus? Ostriches? Some kind of big running bird. "Well, this is not going to help anything," Jack comments, and starts carefully cleaning out the sticks and straw and trash from the mouse nest, careful not to get his fingers in any moving parts.

It serves the duplicate purpose of getting a feel for how the engine works. There probably are belts in there, or even just loose hoses that need taped up. He's thinking a loose connection would be the best and easiest thing to fix. "I don't know if it will use more than one key," he continues as he works. "Cars do not, but this is not a car. Not really. The engine is close enough, though."
