"Something that damaged a whole moon would have to be pretty big. That would affect... a lot of things." Hell, the whole world is balanced nicely with tidal forces and ozone and all that. Damage the moon and it could well damage the Earth's equilibrium on its own, even if the thing that did it didn't actually cause damage to the planet. Which it might have.
