Really? The car thing made the most sense, to me.

I mean we're clearly in some kind of weird post-apocalyptic hell hole, and we're supposed to ride out to... somewhere. Far from here, because you can better believe those nasty things are gong to be on us again in greater force than they were tonight, and there's no telling how long that power generator will last.

So, of course they're going to have us find a vehicle in this place to make it so we can get out of here. Otherwise the game would be over on day one.
