It doesn't begin to occur to him that he might earn that same reputation as a monster to the very people he wanted to save, not when it's easy to justify through normal means.
Not that things are normal here, so much is out of place that he's put aside to worry about later.

Anything like the truth, that he always was concerned about people, especially defenseless ones dealing with the likes of zu and harpies, simply won't be believed, so he doesn't say it. Calm practicality will surely help, and it's easy to default to. "If I wanted to hurt anyone here, I would have done so already. You're injured. There was, I think, running water on one of these trucks. We should get you cleaned up."
