[ Sooner rather than later they will have to think about this stuff, but compartmentalization is impossible to defeat when survival is the bigger issue.

Kaidan doesn't mind being put through the ringer, long as there's a reason to it. Here, now? He sees none—no intel, no dossiers, nothing. He's a soldier with a mission but there's no why to the mission. An expectation of obedience without respect. Where's the quid fucking pro quo?

("You can pay a soldier to fire a gun. You can pay him to charge the enemy and take a hill. But you can't pay him to believe.")

No, Kaidan can't afford to dwell on this. It's just going to piss him off. ]
Charmingly vague. "Battle over resources." The history of humanity.

[ It upsets Kaidan to know that, in another universe, humans were stupid enough to nuke themselves back several ages. War is a necessary evil sometimes, but mutually assured destruction always sat wrong to him. Wouldn't it be better for anyone to survive, even if that meant the enemy, than to leave a planet barren? Isn't some life better than none? Yet another flaw of thinking of the enemy as an other, rather than] a sentient being too. Damn, that sounds...awful. I'm sorry. [ What else can you say? ] Went to a planet like that once. It was...haunting. Standing in a city's ruins, the shadows of vaporized people, nothing but the sound of your breathing and the howling winds for company...really makes you appreciate why WMDs are banned.

Think I would've gone insane if the mission had lasted longer than a day. How do you do it?
