I know how that goes. [ Sink or swim. Survival. Despite despair the human drive to live is (almost always) too strong to put down. It helps to have a cause, of course. But they'll always be people who fight because they know nothing else.

Sad. ]
"Hard times create strong men. Strong men create good times. Good times create weak men. Weak men create hard times." Like that, you mean? [ Kaidan doesn't remember where he heard this one. Read it, probably. So much reading after his stint at BAaT, desperately seeking wisdom after trauma. It was comforting to know that, for as long as people have been alive, they have grappled with the same questions he had. Made him feel less alone. ] The quote never sat right with me, though. Isn't peace what all soldiers strive for? I don't think peace is weak. Not if you always keep in mind what was sacrificed to get there.

[ Doozy of a question. Kaidan finds a careworn piece of steel wool inside a plastic crate full of odds and ends. Rags that stink of cooking oil. The black handle of a pairing knife, metal rivets intact but the blade missing. ] When sentient machines show up. They're called reapers. They come from dark space every fifty-thousand years, bent on destroying all civilizations that become too advanced. Some nihilistic philosophy about how it's necessary to kill us all to make sure the Milky Way doesn't collapse. Doesn't make much sense to me. With cooperation, anything's possible.

And that's exactly how we beat them—every species, every government, every navy joined together, brothers in arms.

I'll seen all kinds of miracles, but I don't think I'll ever see anything like that again. Solidarity on a galactic scale. Almost brings a tear to my eye.
