There's a sudden pang of something akin to homesickness at the way she's sounding more grown-up; it reminds him of the adult voice Ronnie tries to put on when Firestorm is dealing with civilians. Gives him something to think about other than how badly he needs to catch his breath and how glad he is that they've stopped running for a moment.

The idea of "more monsters" or "more of those machine things" does not fill him with joy. "I'm starting to believe that the idea of going out to explore the area a bit was somewhat of a miscalculation on my part."
