"I mean, maybe," Jolie says, which might not make him feel any better. "But there's monsters and weird machine things pretty much everywhere, except the convoy. And a lot of us count as monsters now, anyway, so maybe not even there."

She isn't as bad off as a lot of people. But even she doesn't look fully human anymore, with her gold eyes and the green threads in the skin of her face.

"I can take you back, if you want," she offers. "I know the way out."
