SEPTEMBER TDM

This month, new arrivals will find plenty of sand and rocks strewn over the garage, as well as an oppressive heat. Day or night alike offers little reprieve, and the air is dry and dusty. It will be a task to keep cool, as well as keep control. There’s plenty of threats beyond just the oppressive temperature, and a chaotic, dangerous, landscape to match.

01: SUMMONING CIRCLE

New Drifters arrive with a feeling of stifling heat. The garage has been baking in the sun for most of the day on an exposed mesa, and as the sun goes down it’s only now beginning to cool. Heat stroke and dehydration are both real concerns. There’s water available in the gas station nearby… But it involves crossing a precarious rock arch, exposed to open air. Otherwise, there’s more water in a river further down, but the climb is equally risky and involves scurrying down sheer rock walls. (And dealing with territorial cactaurs at the bottom.)

There is also an oasis off in the distance, but it would be impossible to arrive there on foot. At least for a normal person.

Either way, it’s advised to find some form of hydration, both for the sake of newcomers and for the sake of the Convoy rolling up. With how the heat seems to be beating down on the vehicles, it’s questionable if they have much water to spare.
02: START UP
There are various cars surrounding the garage. (And for a few unfortunates, parked across the rock bridge! Though the rocks should be able to take the weight of the cars. Just don’t look down.) Many of them parked in the shelter of rocks and caves to try and hide from the worst of the heat.

Some of the cars may still need to cool down from the heat, but regardless, there’s a certain connection between different newcomers and cars. Something that suggests a particular vehicle is theirs, backed up by possessing the key to that vehicle. The key to the vehicle may already be in the ignition, on the dashboard… It may have even been on their person, ever since they woke up in that garage. Either way, Drifters have the keys to the vehicle now.

…But there’s a few rough edges on these vehicles. Flat tires, cracked windows and mirrors, maybe some stuck doors and locks; all of them the sort of thing that requires two pairs of hands and supplies. The garage can take care of the supplies… Now it’s just a matter of finding some extra hands.
03: MOON WARP
To complicate things, the moon overhead pulses strangely. Shards of moonstone rain down as night falls over the garage and gas station. And something about these stones warps the surroundings.

A storm begins to brew overhead, with a growl of thunder. The red wasteland rocks surrounding the area begin to reflect sound of the storm, make it sound almost like song… And everyone close to the moon shard stones can feel their bodies begin to warp in turn.

New arrivals affected by the moon shower will find themselves with access to an additional monster form with two variations:

03: MONSTER SHIFT, SPHINX
This month's monster is the Sphinx, a human-lion hybrid that may also have bird-like wings. It’s up to the player on just how leonine their facial features and bodies are. Alongside all sphinx species traits, the following also happens:
+Fluctuating Voice: voice can easily shift into a growl or a roar if emotions grow heated. This roar can also cause damage if loud enough.
+Clawing Pains: Can grow retractable claws, which may provide intense pain or discomfort. Healing magics can help alleviate this pain... Or sharpening their budding claws on just about anything, including stone.
+Compelled to speak in riddles or outright lying. This makes conveying any information found in the truck stop all the more difficult.
Compelled to guard a either people or a location. This could be beneficial for other Drifters if the Sphinx decides to protect them or the Convoy… But it could also be negative, if a Sphinx decides that they need to guard the garage and gas station, and other Drifters are intruders.
+An obsession with riddles and puzzles. And newly arriving to this place certainly counts as a riddle!
+Ambush Predator: Gains an affinity for stalking amongst the ruins, and using them to advantage when hunting other monsters. Running from or turning one's back on a Sphinx is not advised, lest it trigger the hunting instinct.
03: MONSTER SHIFT, MANTICORE
Alongside Sphinx, is the Manticore. A second human-lion hybrid, with rows of razor teeth, batlike wings, and poisonous quills/barbs on their tails. Manticores can access all Sphinx and Drakonis traits, and also gain:
+Voracious Appetite: Need to consume a large amount of meat. Husk monsters are around to feed on, otherwise may be compelled to raid the Convoy for food.
+Truth Compulsion: Manticores gain a loud, almost trumpet quality to their voice, and a need to announce truths instead of riddles. With so many books in the library, there’s lots of truth to announce.
+Guardian Compulsion: like the Sphinx, Manticores can be guards. Generally Manticores tend to be much more territorial, opting for a location and driving all intruders all of it… Or opting for one person and turning savagely protective.
+Instinct Shift: Low control of Protean form, but can subconsciously shift limbs back and forth.
+Toothing Pains: Gains rows of shark-like teeth that can chew through metal. Growing these may result in pain, and pain easily leads to berserk frenzy.
+Poison Sting: While growing the poison quills, the process can be unstable and cause manticores to shoot or shed their spines at inopportune times. The poison is still developing and cannot kill, but can cause paralysis, pain, or hallucinations.
04: TRUCK STOP ARCHIVES
One oddity with the truck stop this time around is just how many books are on the shelves. They hold information on the monsters here: both tales and legends, but also how to go about hunting them. There is also a section of maps, most of them worn out and illegible… But a few of them carry notes hastily scrawled into them about a place called “Nirvana.”
The following information can be gained from a quick scan:
+“Got to stay on the road. Nirvana is supposed to be a paradise.”
+“Somehow after everything we went through, it’s still standing. Still telling us to seek shelter there.”
+“It’ll take months to reach it. Doesn’t matter. Keep going. It’s the only city we have left.”
+“Crossroads Of Fate. Heard someone say it once.”
+”Only way we can make a home. Or make it home.”
+“Sits on leylines. They say that’s how the moonshards keep missing. Somehow warps time and space around it. Wonder what else it can warp.”
05: HUSK MONSTERS
There are several metallic forms around the garage and the truck stop; whenever night falls (or moonshards fall) they burst open, becoming prey for afflicted newcomers… Or threats.

First are gaunt things called Chasers that look like a cross between a human and a horse, and can easily run down newcomers on foot or in cars. The moon warp also makes something in their backs glow, before generating streams of razor wind.

Second are strange bulky armadillo like creatures. Far slower than the Chasers, these monsters prefer to roll into a ball for any form of speed and crush their quarry with their bulk. Once crippled, they tear at targets with sharp digging claws. They are often encountered with mutated moles who dig through stone like earth.

Last are the hulking chimeras shot through with poison and bad tempers, ready to pounce and tackle into prey to inject their toxins.
06: CACTUARS!
Those who wander a little further from the gas station find that the landscape gets more hostile; hotter, sharp edged rocks, steep rocks... And Cactuars. These odd creatures resemble 2-3 foot high cactuses, do an odd little dance, and shoot needles at anyone who gets too close. These needles hurt a lot, but tougher vehicles (and extremely sturdy rocks) can offer protection. They are also agile creatures who require heavy fire power to bring down.

...And rather worryingly, Cactuars CAN be eaten. They resemble a vegetable or a fruit with a lot of water packed into them, or green tofu. They are disconcertingly tasty. But anyone who does eat them is suddenly, physically compelled to do the Cactuar Pose. This lasts for 30 seconds, and activates AGAIN if a Drifter eats more Cactuar. And some well meaning person has stocked the entire Convoy with Cactuar supplies, to add to the confusion: please exercise caution with eating anything green.
MICRO ENCOUNTERS:

PLEASE NOTE! These are small bits of set dressing for players to include in threads if they wish, rather than full fledged prompts or events. You may handwave your exploration of these areas, or thread them out.

Open Sky: The garage and gas station are perched on top of a mesa, with a truly massive sky stretched out overhead. Agoraphobiacs beware. Those with monster forms associated with the open sky (harpies, sphinx, wind elementals, dragons, etc) may find the open sky far more enticing than before. Just be careful when crossing the narrow rock bridges, as there’s a long drop below.

Red Hot Red Rocks: Portions of the mesa react to the heat a little too well. There are patches of rocks that can instantly burn any skin that makes contact; some of those patches are between a Drifter and their vehicle, or the convoy, or the gas station! It will be a task to either cool those patches down, or avoid them.

Vegetation: It’s sparse in the badlands, but a few plants are noticeable. First are the tumbleweeds, dried out and rolling along. These ones have sharp edges, and seem to multiply if they hit a solid object at speed. And are very flammable. There’s also a few cactus like plants; some of them even have drinkable water that won’t poison anyone! They are signified by blue fruit growing on them. And the fact that they shoot their spines at anything that gets too close.

05 Husk monsters
When Serph spies a garage and truck stop in the distance, he immediately changes direction and starts driving his orange Toyota HiLux towards the location. Like so many of the regions they've passed by, he suspects there is a good chance he'll find some new, confused faces there.

He arrives as the metallic forms of the husks split open, monsters climbing out from the twisted shells.

He's easily spotted from a distance; he's of average height but with six feathered wings and glowing eyes and hair, his appearance like a beacon in the darkness as the day falls to night. Despite that, he has no fear of the monsters that inhabit this world.

If he spots someone, he'll approach from an angle where they can clearly see him. He doesn't have any obvious weapons on him. "It's dangerous to linger here. I know a place that's safer."

Will you come with him?

If he sees someone beset by monsters Serph sprints to their rescue, transforming into a taller humanoid creature with bony carapace and sharp teeth. With a hissing snarl he manifests a pillar of ice between the other person and the monster as he runs, temporarily separating them and giving the stranger time to get away from the other monster.

06 Cactuars
As one roams around the shielded area of the Convoy, there is a blue, horse-sized winged feline hunkered down in front of what appears to be a plate stacked with cubes of sliced green tofu. Serph's wings are tucked tight against his back, stinger hidden by the feathers on his tail. Fabric dyed in a violently bold orange colour is tied around his neck like a banner, the main clue to him being a Drifter and not any of the 'wild' monsters.

Eating monsters isn't a difficult task for him. Usually. His comrade had been the one to bring back the weird green plant monster. Normally he'd be more than willing to try something new; he's eaten more than his fair share of strange meat (including some growing from a building). But something about this plant-like meat makes every fibre of his being resist eating it and he doesn't know why.

Serph nudges one of the green blocks with his nose, sniffing. No, it really isn't any more appetising up close.

Should you approach, one of his his ears twitches and he turns his head towards you. "...Do you want to try some?"

Leonardo Hamato | ROTTMNT | drive by silly lil guy

[personal profile] grabaslice 2025-09-17 03:26 pm (UTC)(link)
01- Awaken Turtle Man

[Leonardo expected the whole dead thing to stick this time. He had played the odds for a very long time, and this was his last big gamble. Get Casey through the time portal, regardless of the cost. Waking up was not on his list of expectations that came with being turned into a fine mist. He had seen what those blasts do to people. Leo knows his survival rate should be an impossibility. The forty year old survived the war long enough to know what to expect out of life.

Yet, he's alive. Okay. Cool. Every bone in his body hurts and his head aches, that is proof enough. His prosthetic weighs heavily on him and he can't get it quite working how he needs it to.

Waking up on what feels like the hard floor of a garage also wasn't what he expected. He groans audibly, trying to get up and failing spectacularly.

The giant seven foot turtle will remain laying on the ground. Movement now made illegal. He's woken up in some kind of garage. Out of the direct sunlight at least. He can smell the scent of old oil, dirt and decay.
]

If this is hell, Donnie must be having a great time.

[Why wouldn't he assume he and Donnie are both in hell? Twinsies forever.

Eventually, Leonardo does manage to haul himself up onto his feet. He moves through the old garage, stepping out into the sandy landscape. Just in time to realize he's not alone, there is a whole convoy out here.
]

Well, this should be fun.

[He needs to figure out what is going on sooner rather than later.]

02 - beep beep

[The giant turtle looks no less confused as he drifts through cars, a lot of cars just parked out in the middle of desert away from the convoy. With what explanations he's gotten so far, he's just kind of left wondering why him. Why is he here?

He ends up lingering in front of a blue car that has seen better days, but... it has his attention. He tries the door and finds it open.

The turtle grunts as he moves to sink into the drivers seat, just heavily leaning back. He taps his fingers against the steering wheel. His prosthetic is still acting up, but is doing a bit better after he's shake some of the sand out of it.
]

If I find the keys to this thing, maybe I can try to find some water?

[grandpa, stop talking to yourself.]

((ooc: Not intending to app. Ya'll got a great Leo already <3, just here to be a little silly with future!Leo from the ROTTMNT movie!))
purplexing: (past visiting hours)

hahaha...hahahaha

[personal profile] purplexing 2025-09-17 06:05 pm (UTC)(link)
[A shadow passes overhead, a huge bird of some kind given the shape and the clear outline of a wingspan. Oh great! Looks like the vultures are here to amp up the ambiance. Maybe they're waiting for this fresh meat to keel over. Although vultures don't usually have long tails, huh. Weird.

This one however looks like it's already on its way down, making its spiraling descent. That shadow's getting more people-sized by the moment, and maybe in all the stillness, one might imagine they've heard a gasp.

Abruptly the creature drops down, alighting at the edge of the old garage's roof.
]
grabaslice: (Argumentative/Sass/Start with me)

a weird bird, that happens to be brother shaped

[personal profile] grabaslice 2025-09-17 07:26 pm (UTC)(link)
[Leonardo catches sight of the shadow coasting across the harsh desert sands. His eye ridges pinch together tiredly as he rubs at his face with his flesh hand. The tail makes his mind wander to some of the stranger mutations Krang have taken on.]

If Krang got the vultures here, we're screwed. [He takes in a big breath, squaring his shoulders. He turns to properly try to track the movement. Leonardo doesn't rush head in, but he's moving further away from the garage to get a better look. Taking cover is a far better idea, but he's too heavy to carry away these days.

He stalls for a moment; the figure is different but still reads familiar. Leo isn't sure what to make of it, but he calls out regardless.
]

Alright, are you going to come down, or do I need to come after you? If I come after you, you won't like it! [That is definitely Leo's level of bravado, even if he isn't being flashy right now.]
faceguy: (first in command)

omg two of them (2)

[personal profile] faceguy 2025-09-17 07:29 pm (UTC)(link)
[As Leonardo looks for his keys, he may hear the oncoming roar of a motorcycle, coming up fast behind him.

It weaves around the parked cars, darting back and forth for the path of least resistance, until it eventually swerves into the path in front of the blue car. Leo sits on the seat, wearing a blue hoodie and his single katana secured to his back. It's dark enough out now that he doesn't need his sun shield up.

He pops a wheelie in front of Leonardo's car, seemingly oblivious to the fact that it's presently occupied. He drives up ahead a bit, going down the road in front of the garage.]
grabaslice: (Huh/Curious/Surprised)

Two of them!!!

[personal profile] grabaslice 2025-09-17 07:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, so, definitely people here. Good. [He manages to find some keys after patting around the car console a bit longer. Not that the older turtle is in a rush to get moving yet. He watches the other person pop a wheelie fairly smoothly.

If he had a motorcycle at that age, he probably would be doing the exact same thing and not a single soul could stop him.

The older turtle grunts as he moves to slide out of the driver seat. Should he drive the car? Yes. Will he? No. Stubborn ass. He will walk in the direction of the garage.
]

What do I even open with? Hey, I just woke up here, nice wheelie, what are you doing out here-? [He is indeed talking to himself. Some things truly never change. He starts to jog a little, waving a hand trying to get Leonardo's attention.]

Hey! You! [so much for diplomacy.]
purplexing: (i can't believe it's not butter)

huh imagine that

[personal profile] purplexing 2025-09-17 07:48 pm (UTC)(link)
[His eyesight is sharper these days, but he's still unsure of what he's seeing. Cautious. Confused. Perhaps a bit scared. What else is this place trying to do?

For the moment, Donnie doesn't move as he stares, taking in the foreign details. The other turtle looks like Leo. And then he speaks, making it harder to deny.

But how is this possible..?

The figure drops down from the roof, lithe and mostly (a familiar) green. Wicked looking talons tip the strange, elongated bird-legs, a smattering of feathers dusting his shoulders and thighs. His tail is long and reptilian, curling around him uncertainly as he looks towards the taller turtle.

But the rest...is undoubtedly Donnie. The goggles perched on his head, the purple markings, the brows drawn on that bandanna.
]

...you're...Leo, right?
grabaslice: (Startled/Fearful/Concern)

[personal profile] grabaslice 2025-09-17 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
[ His eyes go wide, and he opens his mouth, then closes it. Leonardo was stunned silent, a new record. Hearing Donnie's voice makes the older turtle jolt backwards, surprise obvious enough from the reaction.

His expression cycles rapidly between surprise, confusion, grief- before settling more firmly on something quietly resolute. This is not the version of his brother he remembers. A distant memory that has been changed drastically. Warped by unseen forces that leave him Donnie, but not quite. It makes things all the more jarring.

He manages to find his voice.
]

Donnie-? [He needs another second. He's rooted in place, feeling like he can't do much.] I'm- Leo. Yeah.

What happened to you?
faceguy: (kiss me just once)

[personal profile] faceguy 2025-09-17 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
[Thankfully, Leo has stopped the motorcycle now, so he can actually hear. He stops at the shout, looking curiously over his shoulder. "Hey you" isn't the greatest address, but it's better than being sneeringly called "reptile".

It must be newbie time again. Not really a surprise, since they've found another garage.

He turns around, ready to give the normal explanation, then freezes for a second, seeing who has addressed him. Another turtle? A big turtle. A big turtle with stripes and a blue mask...

Um. Hm.]

...I have a name and it isn't "you". [It's a slightly belated retort, and his smile is a little more frozen than it might be otherwise, like he isn't sure where to take this. He wonders if he should be saying something like, "It should be, Hey, me!" But that's impossible, right? Right??]
purplexing: (but...science)

[personal profile] purplexing 2025-09-17 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
[The older turtle's response makes Donnie withdraw a little himself. He folds his arms tightly against his plastron as he steps under the shade of the garage, as though that'd be enough to hide what he's become.]

But...you're already here...

[He says this mostly to himself, still looking at the distinctly older features of his brother, eyes fixating on that arm in particular.

It's a lot to take in. His mind is already racing, unsure of what to make of this occurrence.

Did the Leo he's been with suddenly get temporally swapped? Are there two of them? Donnie's not sure what to expect around this place any more so he can't really discount any possibility.

The question pulls him out of his overthink loop, and he blinks.
]

This place. This place happened. Everything here gets warped...

Root | Person of Interest

[personal profile] alittlebeastliness 2025-09-18 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
A - day

[Root has spent a significant portion of her life being people other than herself, and she's developed quite the instinct for it. Therefore, it doesn't take her long to decide what sort of person she wants to be here, at least for the time being - and that sort of person is invisible.

It's not her favorite mode of being: invisibility is, by nature, quiet, dull, and limiting, three things that she strongly dislikes. But in a strange and unknown situation when she has next to nothing in the way of resources, it's both convenient and good for gathering intel. So she makes sure not to look scared (even though she sort of is) or confused (even though she very much is), because that attracts attention. She also avoids going too far in the other direction and looking particularly experienced or confident, because she doesn't want anyone approaching her for help. She takes note of how people move about the convoy and explore the truck stop, and then she copies them nonchalantly, as if she, too, has done this so often that it's become habit. Her aim is to completely blend in with the crowd. If every person who passes her by finds their eyes sliding off of her, not approaching because they see no reason to, then she's done her job well.

Until she matches the key in her jacket pocket with a vehicle (a bulky pick-up truck with oversized wheels - darkly familiar to this Texas girl), and that vehicle has four flat tires. Now, Root knows how to change a tire on a car. She even knows how to change a tire on a car by herself, without any help. But this is a truck, and a lifted one besides, and given the environment, she's not sure that downgrading to regular-sized tires would be a good idea long-term. She's made it about halfway from the garage to the truck, struggling with the first of four bulky tires that's thicker around than she is and over half her height, when she comes to terms with it: she's going to need to ask for help. And so (with an internal sigh that is in no way outwardly reflected), she flags down the first decently strong-looking person that she sees, offering them a small smile. It looks natural; genuine. It is neither of those things.]

Do you have a second? I could use a hand with this.

B - night

[There are other situations where interacting with the people here is unavoidable - such as, for example, when one of the metal figures that she'd initially dismissed as sculptures suddenly breaks apart, revealing a skeletal creature that looks half-horse, half-human. Zombie centaur is the closest term she has for it, but she can tell that that's not quite right. Whatever the terminology, though, it's hostile, and it's heading straight for her.

She's been here for less than a full day. She's unaffected by the moon shower. Her strength and supplies are limited, as is her experience. And so when she pulls out both her handguns and spins back towards the safety of the buildings, shouting to anyone who might be nearby--]

Run!

[-- she doesn't have a clue how fast these enemies are, or how futile it is to try to outrun them.]

C - text, @root

You guys are quiet as church mice on here, aren't you? Not that the commitment to the analog isn't cute, but there's a depressing lack of data to scroll through. The functionality of my network interface also leaves a lot to be desired, but I'm going to assume that's not the fault of anyone who might respond to this. Feel free to tell me if I'm wrong!

I'm curious if anyone is as interested as I am in what this means for cosmology. Do you think we're actually the selves that we remember being, literally transported to another universe? Or do you think we're entirely different beings in possession of quantum memory imprints?

[The horns must be doing some heavy lifting for Ren to appear decently strong. Like Root, he tends to work at making himself unremarkable, average, another anonymous face in the crowd. Just a Japanese high school student, who couldn’t possibly be a delinquent with a criminal record, and certainly couldn’t be the leader of a group of supernatural vigilante thieves. No sirree, not this guy.

He is also terminally above-and-beyond helpful, and already halfway to wrangling half of the tire’s weight by the time Root finishes asking. Ren nods amicably.]

[Root smiles as if she thinks the joke was funny, carefully shifting a portion of the tire's weight over to him while still managing a good grip herself. Picking a teenager had been a good choice for this. If he's a respectful kid, he'll see her as an authority figure to be blandly polite to; if he's a rebellious one, he'll see her as a boring adult. Either way, she doubts he'll show her much interest beyond this single instance of assistance.]

[There is indeed someone nearby: a man with six wings and glowing hair and eyes, seraphic in appearance but not by nature. Strangely, he also has a holstered handgun though he doesn't draw it upon seeing the skeletal creature.

When the stranger says "Run!", she means run towards the the monster, right? Right?

As Serph sprints towards the monster, the brand on his left cheek glows and spreads over his body. Wings tucking into his torso, he transforms into a much taller humanoid creature with long limbs and bone white carapace. Without even breaking step, Serph turns his shoulder towards the skeletal monster and tackles the chaser out of its charge towards the stranger.

The monster is knocked away from its path, stumbling before it turns towards Serph, its back facing towards Root where an object lodged in its spine begins to glow.]

[Well, sure, that's one way to do it.

Root does take off in the opposite direction, expecting anyone with an ounce of sense to follow after her - but if she thought she was at all capable of putting up a fight against the thing, she would have stood her ground too, so she can't blame the guy. And it is impressive to watch, in the way that watching two lions duke it out over territory is impressive. She doesn't zip inside and try to escape the scene entirely, but she sees no need to get involved.

The glow draws her eyes in, something new and interesting in a situation that already has both of those descriptors in spades. Alarming is added to the pile, though, when an overwhelmingly strong burst of wind streams out of the creature's back. It feels like what she imagines standing behind a supersonic jet at takeoff would be like - and it's enough to rocket her off her feet, searing razorburn onto her exposed skin. She's fine - she manages to scramble back up quickly and duck behind a doorway - but goddamn.]

[Ren walks the line between respectful and rebellious, because, you know, people and multitudes. The world may be full of rotten adults but there are just as many who are kind and caring and helpful, even if they’re unorthodox in their ways. Some are just indifferent, too wrapped up in their own affairs to bother with anyone else, and that’s fair, too.
