Things are a little stranger than usual at the gas station and garage. Namely that gravity just isn't working as it should. Objects float, pieces of the floor float... Even unlucky new arrivals can also find themselves floating! It's going to be a challenge to get around without any scrapes or scratches... Though at least there's what looks like a hospital nearby? Granted, it's an upside down hospital, but it's better than nothing.

01: SUMMONING CIRCLE

Drifters come to with an odd floating sensation hooked into their stomachs, and instead of laying on the concrete find themselves drifting a foot or two above the floor. An unfortunate few may be stuck on the ceiling. Whether they crash down hard into the floor (and the various vials, daggers, and broken glass scattered about) or remain floating in the air is a coin toss.

Still, it might be best to lend a hand with pulling them back to the ground, and hoping gravity will work as normal in another breath or two.

Once they make their way out, they can see a gas station and garage located in the midst of strange, floating rocks… And an upside down hospital close by, for those who had a rougher landing.

02: START UP
New arrivals will have a similar experience to before; a Convoy waiting for them, and a collection of vehicles, one of which feels like it belongs to them. The key to the vehicle may already be in the ignition, on the dashboard… It may have even been on their person, ever since they woke up in that garage. Either way, Drifters have the keys to the vehicle now.

…But there’s a few rough edges on these vehicles. Flat tires, cracked windows and mirrors, maybe some stuck doors and locks; all of them the sort of thing that requires two pairs of hands and supplies. The garage can take care of the (sometimes floating) supplies… Now it’s just a matter of finding some extra hands.

And hopefully no one's vehicle has decided to float. But one can never be sure in a place like this.

03: HUSKS AND HAUNTS
The inverted hospital seems to have trouble deciding the exact formation of its hallways, whether the new arrivals should be walking on the ceiling, floors, or walls. But one thing that is certain: this place isn’t entirely deserted. Warnings of “Beware the Husks” have been spray painted on the walls. Metallic bodies line those same halls, some of them broken open. A wet trail leads from the broken Husks to the rafters… Where several odd monsters wait to drop down. Some look like they’ve merged with the hospital equipment, while others look like they’ve been cobbled together from different body parts. And all of them look ready to turn the newcomers into a corpse, or part of a specimen collection.

Strange, malformed chimeric creatures that are Unknown stalk the hallways. Unknowns come in three different colors, red aligned with fire, green with poison, and purple with lightning.

Adding to that are the various screens flickering on, and diagnose new arrivals as infected. The screens declare the infection seems to be contained, but requires further study… And if the monsters aren't enough to worry about, there’s also the restraint systems trying to activate and tie the new arrivals down.
04: TESTING (CW: Needles)
The deeper someone plunges into the hospital, the more the building reacts to them. More defenses are deployed, treating them as thieves or intruders. Traps and monsters alike wait for them, with syringes melded into the forms of attackers, or lining places where someone might step or reach for. The syringes make a quick bite on skin… But it’s only a few minutes later where the effects become clear. Something in those syringes is now in the blood and forcing monster transformations. There might be an antidote amongst the supplies… Or the newcomers might need to rely on each other, in order to stay anchored.

The needles can also force temporary Swarm traits, along with:
+Group Mind: compelled to link thoughts with other Drifters, to share emotions, memories, and achieve cohesion.
+An increasing reliance on telepathy/empathy/etc in place of speech.
+Increasing collectivist mindset. The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few; this becomes more evident during high stress situations.
+Compelled to hunt and share their prey with others.
+Gravity Affinity: If possessing wings or the ability to wall climb, may freely hunt/traverse corrupted gravity areas.
05: LONG WAY DOWN
A portion of the gas station breaks away with groan and a rumble. And it is slowly pulled up and up, taking a portion of new comers with it! They (and anyone watching) will need to act fast, as gravity starts to go weird the further they rise. They’ll need to find a way back down, taking any supplies from the now-floating garage that they can grab.

What’s more, they are drifting closer to the broken moon, and that seems to be having a strange effect on those stranded on the new floating ruin. They may start to feel their control fray, and their forms shift, the higher they rise.

In terms of getting back down, there’s a handful of tow lines in the ruin that might work as ropes. There’s also a few pieces of rock that are floating up more slowly, and could work as stairs back down… Or there’s just jumping and falling fifty feet and hoping for the best.
06: PSYCHIC ECHOES
There's one last quirk to this area; a few scattered bits of odd plantlife, and the odd dead brain monster. While these things aren't a threat on their own (beyond being unnerving) they still pack a psychic punch; mainly in the form of temporary psychic abilities.

It's possible that after coming in contact with either plants or corpses, newcomers will find themselves gifted with either empathy (projecting or receiving emotions) telepathy, OR the ability to share their dreams with others, and having their dreams influenced by others in turn. This effect fades in just a day or so, but is still capable of causing mishaps.

MICRO ENCOUNTERS:

PLEASE NOTE! These are small bits of set dressing for players to include in threads if they wish, rather than full fledged prompts or events. You may handwave your exploration of these areas, or thread them out.

Broadcast: The garage contains a few burnt out monitors. But a handful of them are playing a message over and over again on loop, filled with static. It’s a recording of important looking people in lab coats advising people to remain indoors and avoiding all objects falling from the sky. Especially “moon shards.” They insist that they are working to contain and cure the infection, but the safest action is to remain inside.

Warped Air: As seen in Long Way Down, the air overhead has strange warped pockets in it. There seem to be slightly different shards hanging suspended in the air, looking more silvery than the surrounding rocks. Almost like it could have fallen from the broken moon overhead.

Medical supplies: Most of the medical supplies found in the hospital seem to consist of healing salves and potions, a handful of healing herbs, and a few antidotes for poison or sickness. As for reverting transformations… It’s advised that new comers be careful of taking any experimental medicine. It may revert a change. It may also leave them hallucinating nightmares and fears, and they’ll be wanting someone close by to help administer the drug.

[Buffy can't help how she's feeling, she knows that but it's bothering her. She nods a little, tongue licking over her fangs.]

What's the point of the change? Do you have any idea?

[Cloud's slash is deflected, and he's not surprised, just angry. What the hell is he talking about? How could he not know who he is? They've only been warring with each other for the last half a decade almost.

He opens his mouth to speak, then shuts it again. Then he opens it and what he says probably will confuse Sephiroth even more than usual.] How do you keep coming back to life? Is what I want to know.

By not dying to begin with.

[He's no longer interested in entertaining this particular bit of foolishness, especially with gravity still badly distorted.

Whether or not Cloud does, Sephiroth heads for the ground. Aerial shenanigans were best left to those who could fly, and he can't. At least it's not far to go.]

Try it? He will.

The energy blast doesn't punch a hole through the back of one of Agni's heads, he's not weak to that particular element (and good thing for him SecUnit doesn't trend towards ice), but that doesn't mean it doesn't hurt, the smell of burning a strange thing to associate with a demon of fire. How much damage is done is obscured by Heat immediately snapping with intent to bite the offending arm and arm-set gun - clean off if he can get a good grip and put enough force behind it. Harder said than done when this form has no neck to speak of. And then heave in an effort to throw SecUnit off so he can better put his claws to use. Heat only really has two things going for him, raw power and durability. At least it means he can't suddenly burst into flame .. not here, not anymore.

There is exactly one authority Heat will obey these days, and it's not SecUnit. Its opinions and wishes simply didn't process as being even remotely important, just another enemy that didn't fall in line when its leader was killed or an upstart rookie that didn't know its place.

That there's a third secret option won't be believed for a while.

Qrow's happy enough to have Ren along for the ride (even if Qrow nearly shoots Arsene the first time the Persona makes his appearance). Qrow's not exactly the master of subtlety, especially when he's not able to freely transform into a bird in order to slink about unnoticed.

So he lets Ren take the lead on investigating, occasionally calling out advice or warnings when his newly acquired cat ears (and their more sensitive hearing) pick up approaching creatures. Qrow's also expecting injuries while they fight their way through the hospital, though his Aura gives him an extra layer of protection against attacks; Ren may catch occasional glimpses of red light flickering over Qrow's skin. He suspects Ren may not have the same advantages, however, and when he is eventually hit Qrow moves forward to provide him some cover.

"You okay, kid?"

Len really shouldn't be all that surprised to hear that someone else from his world is here. That's- what, four folks so far? Not even including himself. As it turns out, fortune favors the people who have already gone through a bunch of shit and clearly wants them to go through more. It does not escape him that this man will receive an uncomfortable wake-up call when other strangers start introducing themselves as being from other Earths.

"Aw, they're friendly once to get to know 'em."

Len says, with an effortlessly disarming smile and all the confidence of a man who hasn't avoided a route just because those flying fucks were in proximity. He tugs the gauze flat, deftly tying a knot with the loose ends.

"There's a few of us here from those parts. Mostly Vegas. How far east?"

[It’s not right or fair to unleash all of these turbulent thoughts and feelings on her. She’s a stranger, they’ve only just met, but - that kindness he senses from her is so strong. She reminds him of Ann in that respect, and he misses Ann so much, like he misses all of his friends. They’re his north star, his anchor, and he feels every inch of the hollowness of the number zero without them.

He doesn’t want to burden her, but … she said she’s been a leader, right? And he really, really needs to talk to someone, like he’s been the open ear and open heart and open arms of support for so many others. Maybe she’ll understand. Maybe she’ll forgive him for asking so much of her.

I think I made a mistake, he says in his mind, because the words stick in his throat and refuse to go any farther. I was honest and I said too much and I’m afraid I’m going to lose him again.

The wash of feelings she’d felt before returns, stronger and more of everything. If the wave before was a trickle, the one now is the flood after the crumbling of a dam. Ren tries desperately to pull it all back. He knows it’s too much.]

Sorry, [he manages, a hoarse whisper as he shakes his head and inhales a shaky breath. Focus. He can do this. Answer the question about the Convoy.]

Lots of people, brought here by the ritual from all over. [He takes another steadying breath, listens to the cadence of their footsteps.] They’ve been changed. Everyone does.

Deacon shrugs, biting his tongue for once in regards to Danse's skillset, but the part about trusting the others is something he finds intriguing. Deacon doesn't know that he can trust anyone, and that includes Danse in some regards, but if Danse is being honest here, it's really throwing him off.

"You can't trust everyone," he mutters into his cigarette, his voice straining before his inhale. It's a hard truth about life, and one lesson he might instill on Danse yet. Or would be if the other man wasn't staring at that mug like a confused dog. Deacon's eyes follow Danse's to the insane slogan on their makeshift ashtray and huffs out a brief laugh, shaking his head.

"Don't look at me. I just got here."

"Far enough. I stayed mobile on a caravan with my pet mole rat, Ziggy," he shrugs, "We traveled all up and down the coast... through the Midwest... thought we'd see the whole country at one point, but I didn't have it in me."

He sighs, then pats the bandage on his arm and nods in appreciation. "Thanks for this, pal. I'll get you back, sometime."

A blessing or a curse, depending on who you ask. Either way, it's believed that our changes are a result of the broken moon and its goddess.

All right. SecUnit it is.

[She gives a little shrug, but doesn't question the name any further. It's not like it's the most unusual thing she's encountered here so far.

She glances at the ceiling as she considers its question about the path she took.]

Straight shot back down the way we came - took a left at the end of the hall, and then there's a side door on the right I came in through.

[Her eyes drift to the knife. She hadn't forgotten about it, but SecUnit hardly seems inclined to stab her, so it was hardly a priority.]

No. The robots are actually pretty upfront about themselves.

[ The sarcasm is contagious, if as deeply monotone as it ever is from Danse. He's not actually sure if "robot" applies to SecUnit, or what it would call itself if not that, but he thinks he's at least qualified enough to use the term. It's been strange here, finding himself torn between two different and completely opposing ways of being not-human, and it doesn't make him feel like what's going on is a happy medium.

Reluctantly, he rolls up his sleeves. It's not necessarily proof of what he's saying, because the amount of thick dark hair on his arms and hands is still within the realm of the ordinary for a particularly furry human, and she's never seen him without his flightsuit and gloves to know he didn't arrive like that--but the sharp canine fangs he bares at her are most certainly new, and much harder to explain any other way. ]

With a nod and a wordless sound of agreement, Ren continues on ahead. The phantom pain of his old injuries fade and dull but don’t disappear completely. He focuses on breathing, on the rhythm of their footsteps, aiming to clear his mind of the fog of anger and fear while Arsène chants unhelpfully in the back of his mind, release thy rage, release thy rage.

Ren is comfortable with silence, usually. Silence feels natural to him, most of the time, but the silence now feels like the sharp point of a needle. This silence threatens to unmoor him. Maybe words are what will ground him.

“Your weapon is impressive.” That’s a good conversation starter, right? “I have a friend back home who’d probably enjoy using something like it.”

They keep him company at night. He can already hear Heat calling him an idiot if he said anything along those lines aloud. But it's hard to put into words that grim finality of hanging up that title of leader and realising he was in an unfamiliar world where the familiar was happening again and while having none of his comrades, none of his tribe, by his side. The Convoy is small in comparison to the hundreds of soldiers in their territory.

He had been alone in Nirvana, but not for long.

Since the beginning of his remembered existence, before they were a Tribe of significance, he always had someone by his side. What is a leader without followers? What is a Tribe without people?

You can't be a comrade alone.

But instead, he says, "My armour was destroyed. One made these clothes from the limited supplies to replace it."

He folds his arms.

"They don't have an Atma. They don't need to hunt."

"Maybe that's what accounts for the shape of this vehicle," he mutters. "The previous owner rendered it necessary to compensate for something." This is the funniest he ever gets, Deacon. He's still going to shift uncomfortably in his chair, because he did not ask for the mental image that's now living in his head.

It's a distraction from the more serious advice, and the thing is that Danse doesn't disagree with it. He knows Deacon means it. He knows why Deacon means it. It would be sage advice in the general wasteland, and maybe it still is here, too--Danse doesn't know everyone in the convoy as well as he probably should by now, and some of them might be deeply unsavory characters. But he still can't take it to heart the way he's meant to.

"I know I can't let my guard down around everyone. But paranoia has served me far worse here than giving the benefit of the doubt would have. I've learned that the hard way. And when I have needed assistance, there's always been someone willing to provide it. That's what I meant when I said that people cooperate well here. That is one of the cagiest responses he's ever heard pass Serph's lips, which was in a way its own explanation. He's hiding something. Combined with knowing that the people here were also demons and at least one wore an atma mark (or what looked like one, he didn't recognize the type specifically), Serph's replies silence Heat entirely for a time.

On the surface it's both protecting these people, and lying through his teeth. It's not painting a pleasant picture, but it's also one he's not sure how to address. The possibilities were nearly limitless, from being under duress by one of these 'useless' people, to some extended form of Charm, to.. what else?

Maybe they're responsible for these wings.

Heat turns, as if that does settle the matter however temporarily, though it's certain it hasn't, fully intending to head further into the hospital. They don't need to hunt. "I do. I'm going. You can stay here or come find dinner, I don't care."

[There's a certain presence Kotone has that reminds him very much of a completely different small, seemingly helpless girl who had no place being in a monster-filled battlefield.

He'd been actively hunting those sounds of monsters stalking through the halls, and hadn't expected to come across some young woman looking for somewhere to hide, and it renders him so baffled that it's actually astonishingly easy to tug Heat into moving in the wrong direction away from his pending dinner.

'Making a run for it' is something he just doesn't normally do. Ever. But he goes with it anyway, bemused.]

... I'm fine. They're not really much of a threat to me.

[None of them used ice after all, a pleasant coincidence. Her outfit didn't look familiar, but the bits of red seemed deliberate.

When Heat turns away, there is a strange pain in Serph's chest. Somehow, it feels like once again Heat is slipping away from him. But this time, he's here to see it happening. That somehow, he's driving Heat away.

Siezed by impulse, Serph reaches to grab Heat by the shoulder before he can walk off. But the words he really wants to say seem to be stuck in his throat.

"We're the only ones from the Junkyard," he says instead, wings tucked tightly at his back, tense. They're the only ones who know what it was like to live there. "Everyone else... they come from different lands."

He won't stop Heat from pulling back, but he won't have Heat hunt alone either.
